How to Search for and Add Legal Sources to a Chat

Search Zeno's legal sources, explore related material, and add up to 20 sources to a chat for Legal Research.

Written by Eloy Wijlhuizen

Search Zeno's legal sources, explore material connected to a source, and add the sources you need to a chat. When you attach a legal source, Zeno can work with the available source text before answering.

Choose the Jurisdiction and Source Types

Before sending a legal research request, review the jurisdiction and source types selected for the chat. Open Sources in the composer, choose the jurisdiction that matches your question, and enable the available source types that you want Zeno to consider.

Sources menu showing available jurisdictions, the default jurisdiction and Manage jurisdictions.

The available choices depend on the selected jurisdiction and your organisation's access. Selecting European Union sources does not automatically include the national sources for a country. Check the complete selection before sending the request.

Search for Legal Sources

  1. In the chat composer, select Add to prompt.

  2. Select Add a source.

  3. Enter your query in Search legal sources, then select Search.

  4. Select one or more results. To inspect a result without selecting it, select Open.

  5. Review your selection, then select Add to chat.

  6. Check that the selected jurisdiction matches your question, enter your instructions, and send the message.

Adding sources does not send your message. You can continue writing your prompt or add more sources first.

Use Search Operators

Terms without an operator use AND. You can also use these operators to make a query more precise:

  • contract AND liability finds results that contain both terms.

  • contract OR agreement finds results that contain either term.

  • contract NOT consumer excludes results that contain the next term.

  • "force majeure" OR hardship keeps the quoted words together as one phrase.

Operator names are not case-sensitive. Parentheses and nested expressions are not supported.

Find Related Sources

  1. Select Related sources beside a source in the search results, your selected-source list, a source preview, or a source opened from a Zeno answer.

  2. Under Document types, choose the types you want to include. Case law and Articles are available for this search. Parliamentary History and Official Gazettes may also be available.

  3. To narrow the results, select Filters and choose a citation direction or date range.

  4. Sort the results by Most highly cited, Oldest, or Newest.

  5. Select one or more sources, then select Add to chat.

You can follow Related sources again from a result to explore another set of connected documents. Select Back to return without losing your earlier search or selection.

Review and Manage Attached Sources

  • You can select up to 20 legal sources across search results and related-source results.

  • Selected sources appear as removable source attachments in the composer.

  • You can change the jurisdiction while legal sources are attached. Review whether every attached source still matches the new jurisdiction before sending the request.

  • A source without available text cannot be selected. Zeno labels it This source is missing text in our database.

  • If no matching documents are available, Related sources is unavailable for that source or the panel shows No related sources match these document types.

Review the answer and its citations before using the result in your work.
